Remove your Textured Ceiling
Textured ceilings are an interior design staple of the past. Popcorn finishes became popular for a few reasons: it absorbed sound, it was a quick way to finish a ceiling, and it hid any damage or flaws. A popular choice for making the texture material was asbestos, which was one of many reasons this trend died down. Before making any attempts to remove this type of ceiling finish, be sure to test the materials and handle them appropriately. If you want to attempt the job yourself, this is the best advice we can give you:
- This is a messy home project. The first step is to remove or push your furniture in the room you' ll be working on. Any of your belongings that are left in the room should be covered by drop cloths, plastic tarps, or other protective materials. You should also cover the floors as much as possible. Cover your electric outlets and vents after shutting off any heating or air conditioning that may be running.
- Spray the ceiling texture with water just enough to dampen it. Work in smaller areas. After spraying, wait 15 minutes before using a sharp putty knife to scrape over the texture.
- To refinish the ceiling smooth, and repair any imperfections, grab a joint compound and apply. After it dries, sand down the ceiling until it is smooth and even. Add primer and new paint as desired. Re-hang anything like light fixtures or fans, return your furniture, and enjoy the new room!
