- Pick a warm day with low humidity to paint. If you're painting outside, make sure there are no wet areas. If you're painting indoors, open windows to make sure the air is ventilated. Protect anything you don't want to be painted with drop cloths and tarps.
- Clean the surface before painting with a water and vinegar solution. Use a scrub brush or rag if necessary. Remove the old paint and any rust with a stiff wire brush. (This will prep the surface by peeling away loose paint, you can also sand it if needed, and it requires a dust mask and safety goggles!)
- Apply primer. Find a spray primer specifically made for metal. You can find a primer and a brush to apply by hand if you prefer it, but the spray will apply the smoothest. For the best results, MDF recommends using one or two coats and letting it sit for at least 24 hours before adding the new paint.
- Add your new paint. Find a paint that is made for metals and inhibits rust. This kind of paint can be tinted for an assortment of colors and finishes. Pick the one you want and paint one or two coats.
